What would you say has been the most rewarding part of being a mother? The most rewarding part has been seeing my family grow and watching my 6-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son love on and interact with one another. For so many years I wondered if I would ever get the opportunity to be a mother, so seeing my two beautiful children interact is the most rewarding part of motherhood.

Best piece of advice you’ve received regarding motherhood? The best piece of advice would have to be that the kids won’t remember if everything was perfect. They won’t remember the days we lost it or couldn’t deal. Just show up—they remember that you were always there when they needed you. Learning to give yourself grace in the hard moments can make such a difference because there is no perfect parent or way to parent.

The biggest thing you’ve learned from your children is: That I am not as “healed” as I thought I was from my childhood traumas. Before having kids post-trauma, I prided myself on being “healed” and not being effected by my CSA. The truth is that having my daughter exposed my raw triggers. The thought of others watching her paralyzed me with fear, and the idea of her being away from me made me physically ill. The hard truth about motherhood that a lot of us don’t talk about is that it will most definitely bring some of your unresolved issues right back to the surface.

What is your ideal way to celebrate Mother’s Day? My ideal way to celebrate would be to go to a hotel with my love and the kids. Have room service, breakfast in bed, go down and get a spa treatment, relax poolside, grab family dinner and then spend the night with my love—child-free.
