Fabulous Eco-Winemakers: Part 4

Halter Ranch - Kevin Sass

Kevin Sass of Halter Ranch

Tell us about the sustainable and eco-friendly practices at the vineyard: Halter Ranch was founded with the goal of preserving and respecting the natural ecosystem on the westside of Paso Robles; this is why we have left nearly 2,500 of 2,700 acres untouched for the native flora and fauna to flourish. We have implemented various initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint and promote environmentally responsible practices. This includes reducing the weight of our glass bottles, utilizing a newly built solar array, which powers 100 percent of winery operations, implementing an animal grazing program, and transitioning the entire ranch to organic farming. We believe in being responsible stewards of the land and strive to make a positive impact on our environment and community.

Tell us about the varietals you make: Nestled in the picturesque Adelaida district of Paso Robles, Halter Ranch spans 2,700 acres. However, only 200 acres are dedicated to vineyards, where 18 carefully selected grape varieties are planted. Setting a new benchmark for sustainability, Halter Ranch is in the process of obtaining its organic certification and is poised to be certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers in July 2023. Renowned for their distinctive Rhone- and Bordeaux-style wines, Halter Ranch is celebrated for its flagship wine, Ancestor, as well as its sparkling Picpoul Blanc, which is called Libelle. With 18 varieties and an innovative spirit, Halter Ranch also produces unique bottlings such as Tempranillo and Vermentino.
