Fabulous People: Karl Pfleider

Karl Pfleider is the culinary director for The Blind Pig Restaurant Group in Orange County. “In my role, I do a bit of everything within the group, from working directly with the owner to front-of-house managers helping execute duties. However, my main focus consists of working alongside the chefs at all locations where I help closely with the daily operations, menu changes, private events and everything in between.” Learn about Karl Pfleider

Hometown: I grew up in Tustin, CA.

First job: My first job was at the Vans store in Tustin Market Place.

Favorite ways to spend your free time in CA: I have too many hobbies and not enough time, but I enjoy being outdoors, riding motorcycles, camping and doing anything in the mountains or desert. I recently got back into jiu-jitsu, which I used to do as a teenager. Now, I’m back at it in my 30’s and just trying not to get hurt!

Your biggest accomplishment and why: I’m proud of sticking with this company for over 10 years and participating in its growth. I was young when I started, and it’s common for people to jump around a bunch. I didn’t want to play that game anymore. I saw an opportunity for a consistent and stable future, so I ran with it.

The biggest obstacle you overcame: My biggest obstacle goes back to sticking through the job. It has its ups and downs just like everything else, things could have gone many different ways if I entertained other options. But, I had my goals set and pushed through.

Someone who inspires you and why: My fiancé. She’s deep in the thick of an accelerated nursing program, working two jobs, still helping at home with our two dogs and everything else. Whenever I start losing that drive, I look at her and snap out of it.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Find a kitchen, work through it, be a sponge, ask for more responsibility and move on once it gets easy.

Favorite quote: I have two: “Rule No. 1: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Rule No. 2: It’s all small stuff.” ––My friend, Philly

“Self-control is true power.” ––Marco Pierre White

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I am overly critical of myself. I have always been this way, and I’m constantly trying to work on it.

What makes someone fabulous:  Someone who is an all-around solid person. They are in tune with themselves, kind, consistent and a pleasure to be around.
