Hometown: Texarkana, Texas.
First job: Busboy at a local restaurant.
Favorite ways to spend your free time in CA: I love trail running, backpacking, and spending time in the mountains.
Your biggest accomplishment and why: My biggest accomplishment is being a husband of 23 years and a father to four wonderful kids. By no means have I been perfect, but there’s nothing I’m prouder of than my wife and four kids.
The biggest obstacle you overcame: I wouldn’t say we’ve overcome it, but owning a small business is, without a doubt, the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced. There is nothing more gratifying but also frightening, exhausting, and unrelenting than growing a business from the ground up.
Someone who inspires you and why: Brady Mauritson, my best friend’s 16-year-old son. Brady has Down Syndrome. In some ways one could naturally feel pity or sorrow for Brady, but not Brady. If I could have half of the joy, half of the enthusiasm, or half of the optimism that Brady wakes up with every day, I would be a much better person. He’s not afraid to try new things and constantly talks about the future and what he wants to accomplish. He doesn’t dwell on perceived challenges or inequities. He tackles the challenges of every day with a huge smile and a positive attitude.
Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Make sure you have a passion and curiosity for it. The hours will be long, and you won’t be in it to get rich. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be curious about the industry.
Favorite quote: “Run the mile you are in.” —Unknown.
It’s one of the wisest quotes that applies as much to life as running.
Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I love Bonsai trees. I’m fascinated by them.
What makes someone fabulous: Passion. Not being afraid to pursue your dreams. Find something you love and relentlessly pursue it. Fabulous things will follow.
