Descanso Restaurant to Open in Los Angeles

Descanso Restaurant, a modern taqueria known for authentic Mexican flavors and interactive dining experiences, is set to open this summer in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood. The new location promises to bring the vibrant essence of Central Mexican street cuisine to the heart of Los Angeles.

The new 9,000-sq.-ft. venue can accommodate 250 guests and features a central bar with a curated selection of premium tequilas and mezcals. Guests can enjoy freshly made gourmet tacos and quesadillas at the taco bar, where tortillas are made to order on a traditional comal. The restaurant also boasts two outdoor patios, private event spaces, a vibrant bar and a distinctive Plancha Room with four Plancha Grill tables. Here, Planchero Chefs prepare multi-course meals right at the table, sharing the rich history and culture of Mexican cuisine.

“We are thrilled to introduce Descanso to the vibrant Mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles,” says Rob Arellano, owner of Descanso, in a recent press release. “Drawing inspiration from the lively streets of Central West Mexico, our menu and restaurant experience offers a modern twist on authentic Mexican cuisine. At Descanso, guests can expect to embark on a culinary journey infused with the vibrant flavors and warmth of traditional Mexican street-inspired cooking. Our dedication to crafting from scratch fare ensures that every dish is a celebration of Mexico’s rich culinary heritage. With an ambiance reminiscent of Mexico and a commitment to genuine hospitality, our new location promises to be a go-to destination for those seeking a taste of Mexico right in the heart of Los Angeles.”

A standout feature of the new location is the Private Plancha Room, an intimate space dedicated to personalized, high-end dining experiences. The exclusive experience allows guests to enjoy a menu crafted by the chef, offering a front-row seat to the culinary artistry.

“Dining a la Plancha is truly the heartbeat of Descanso,” says Arellano, the mastermind behind the concept, in a press release. “The Plancha experience brings the flavors, sights, smells and sounds of street vendors right to your table. Here, the aromas and sounds transport diners to the heart of Mexico, offering a sensory immersion that resonates long after the meal. From the tasty scent of sizzling meats to the lively beats of street music, guests can dive in hands-on. It’s like taking a trip to the heart of Mexico with every bite and sound.”

Executive Chef Jose Angulo, from San Julian, Jalisco, Mexico, combines traditional techniques with modern culinary training to create innovative Mexican dishes. Signature offerings include hanger steak, short rib estofado, salmon con chile limon and unique street tacos like the Felipe, featuring ribeye filet marinated in garlic, and the Volcano with ranchero steak and agave-glazed shrimp.

Complementing the food is a selection of mezcals, tequilas and Mexican wines, alongside craft cocktails made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The vibrant bar scene, characterized by the contemporary decor and lush greenery, offers a perfect backdrop for socializing and enjoying Latin music.

Descanso’s Los Angeles location will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, with weekend brunch and weekday happy hour specials.
