Westerly-Bar

Restaurant of the Week: Westerly Public House

Since opening this past June, Westerly Public House has brought the coastal experiences and tastes of Sydney, Australia, to the heart of Point Loma. The new concept combines the laidback style of San Diego with the matching sunny climate of Sydney to bring locals and visitors alike a new understanding of the tastes and culture of Australia.

With an open, indoor-outdoor layout, Westerly Public House offers a rustic design throughout the restaurant, with soft wood tones and touches of a light, pastel color palette. The style was inspired by the natural elements of the ocean and the Bondi Beach in Sydney. The interior dining space features 800 square feet of intimate, private space that expands over the concept’s 4,000-sq.-ft. courtyards. Its interior houses an expansive bar made entirely of recycled surfboard materials, showcasing a prime example of Westerly’s sustainability-focused style.

The outdoor space is breathtaking, featuring a chic design complete with lush plant life, cozy overhead string lights, warm fireplaces and an abundance of flat screens. It is the perfect place to hang out with loved ones or to cozy up for an intimate night for two. The spot brings an environmentally friendly approach to not only its design but its plates, too.

With a no-waste ethos and a focus on providing a sustainably-driven menu, Executive Chef Jessie Paul brings an innovative, creative approach to each dish. Chef Paul is inspired by traditional Aussie favorites and fuses the tastes with San Diego’s coastal flavors.

Each dish at Westerly is house-made with only fresh, locally sourced ingredients from the best of Southern California’s waters, farms and fields. Some fan-favorite dishes include light bites like the Bloomin’ Mushroom with Enoki mushrooms fried to perfection in a buttermilk compote or plates from Main Attractions, like the Piri Piri chicken crafted with crispy potatoes, arugula and chicken coated in a spiced coconut puree, or the creamy chicken rigatoni, completed with pan-seared tomatoes, basil and crispy toasted bread crumbs.

Signature handcrafted cocktails inspired by summer fun are a must to try. Some of our favorites include the Perth Bell hand-shaken with Cutwater Spirits Blanco tequila, Ancho Reyes, lemon, rose, strawberry and a splash of sparkling wine; as well as the Yacht Club Fizz crafted with The Botanist Gin, Italicus liqueur, lemon, sugar, cucumber, kiwi, egg white and soda. If cocktails aren’t your style, there is an extensive wine list (including some rare, orange pours) and local brews on tap.
