Restaurant of the Week: Sandpiper Wood Fired Grill & Oysters

Sandpiper Wood Fired Grill & Oysters is a casual neighborhood restaurant just a few blocks from the beautiful La Jolla Shores Beach. As its name suggests, the restaurant serves wood-fired dishes and oysters with desserts from Georges at the Cove pastry chef, Aly Lyng.

One of the hottest new restaurants in La Jolla, Sandpiper is the sister restaurant to founder Trey Foshee’s Georges at the Cove – a famed La Jolla landmark that overlooks the coastline and the Pacific Ocean. Charming inside and out, Sandpiper is a unique combination of chic and cozy; diners can sit inside where the bar is a beautiful centerpiece of the space, or relax on our outdoor patio near the fireplace.

Led by Chef Marty Fay, the menu features a variety of fun, shareable items from a custom-designed wood-fired grill and oyster bar. Now open at 11 a.m., Wednesday through Saturday, guests can enjoy sandwiches, salads and oysters for lunch. Some standouts from the lunch menu include the shrimp po boy and the noodle salad.

There are a few true standout dishes on the menu. The plump, flavorful steamed mussels are served with Tom Kha broth (a Thai coconut soup known for its exquisite balance of lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves) and accompanied by wood-grilled sourdough bread, providing a delightful contrast of textures and allowing you to savor every last drop of the broth. The slow-grilled prime rib (available on the weekends) is juicy, flavorful, and served with a decadent crisp, loaded skillet potato; while the handcrafted pappardelle pasta, lovingly made in-house, has a delightful, full-bodied mushroom ragù, a luscious concoction of earthy mushrooms, aromatic herbs, and a hint of tomato.

Dinner begins at 4 p.m. nightly. Diners can order a half dozen blue devil oysters for just $12 during happy hour from 4 to 5:30 p.m. every day the restaurant is open.

Sandpiper is also known for its extensive International wine list, with bottles ranging from $40 to $240, alongside a great selection that can be ordered by the glass.

Sandpiper is open Wednesday to Sunday, opening at 11 a.m. for lunch, and serving brunch starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Dinner is served Wednesday to Sunday, starting at 4 p.m.
