Restaurant of the Week: The Rex Seaside Steakhouse

Simple yet sophisticated, The Rex Seaside Steakhouse is Redondo Beach’s neighborhood gem, cultivating a comfortable community and a delicious culinary experience.

Founded in 2021, The Rex transformed the meaning of a traditional steakhouse–elevating both flavors and floors in this three-story modern setting. Just steps from the ocean, this prime location holds incredible value for the members of this cozy beach town as well as for many visitors around Southern California. Executive Chef Walter Nunez leads his team in crafting dishes with memorable appeal and delectable flavor pairings–creating a luxe experience with a laidback feel.

Great for date nights, celebrations or even just drinks, The Rex steakhouse doesn’t disappoint in its upscale loungelike setting. Decked with warm ambient lighting, wood and a wine wall, the atmosphere provides visual appeal that changes on every floor.

If you are looking for a steak dinner and some one-on-one time with your significant other, venture to the first floor, equipped with an outdoor patio, modern booth seating and a dimly-lit ambience. You’ll be cared for by the professional and poised staff who are sure to make your evening memorable.

Looking for a quick drink? The second floor hosts a craft cocktail bar named The Drift, only open on weekends. Flat-screen TV’s and fire pits make this the perfect hangout with friends while sipping on world-class cocktails.

At the very top is the brand-new private dining room, sitting 18 guests comfortably at a family-style table. Great for work meetings, pre-wedding parties and wine tastings, the room is surrounded with glass shutters that open with a 360-degree view of the Hollywood Riviera and marry together the “beauty and beach” scene.

With a stunning establishment that draws in a lively crowd each night, The Rex steakhouse does not disappoint with its top-of-the-line cuisine and cocktails. The appetizers are a modern take on classic favorites–with grilled bread deliciously saturated in butter and shrimp cocktail, charred to perfection. For the adventurous, order the crudo, complete with kanpachi, truffle and kumquat–bursting with a fresh, spring-time flavor. Be sure to slip into relaxation with The Rex’s now “classic” cocktail–Milk Punch–which unlike the name is a clear concoction of bourbon, coconut, pineapple and sherry. Have one…or many!

If you are looking to stay on the lighter side of things, the menu is sure to accommodate you with rich and flavorful pastas and bright salad selections. You can’t go wrong with the heart-warming duck breast tagliatelle topped off with manchego shavings and kale, or try pork jowl spaghetti for a familiar favorite.

Fish lovers are also welcome here–even at a steakhouse. Lightly crispy and wonderfully refreshing, the branzino, rubbed in guajillo and plated in Americaine sauce, delights the palate while leaving room for even more fabulous courses–such as the prolific steak array that outshines the ordinary steakhouse. From wagyu to filet, each cut of meat is tender, rich and flavorful all on its own–but that isn’t to say the enhancements aren’t divine. Fresh grated wasabi brings out a freshness while roasted bone marrow deepens the rich, buttery steak flavor.

And you can’t forget the fabulous sides that work perfectly with any entreé. Jumbo asparagus soaked in fresh herbs and béarnaise, mac and cheese with toasted panko and mornay sauce, and the unexpected “Hoppin John”–a take on a Southern white bean dish–are generous in portion and make a great addition to any meal at The Rex steakhouse.

You won’t want to miss a sweet finish. Chef Nunez ensures you’re ending the meal with love on a plate, as rich butter cake, warm sticky-toffee pudding and the all-new Pavlova with guava cream complete your steakhouse journey and guarantee you will be back in a matter of days. In fact, regulars come up to five days a week!

In steakhouse history, there is nothing quite like The Rex in Redondo Beach. If you are looking for modernized classics, enticing treats or a luxurious, yet relaxing, atmosphere, Chef Nunez and the staff at The Rex will make sure your evening is outstanding.

The Rex Seaside Steakhouse is open daily from 5 to 10 p.m., and The Drift is open Friday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight
