July 12 to July 28: California State Fair

The California State Fair is set to captivate visitors from July 12 to July 28 at Cal Expo in Sacramento. Highlights include agricultural competitions, carnival rides, diverse food and drinks, live entertainment and educational exhibits.

One of the key attractions of the California State Fair is its extensive agricultural shows and competitions. Visitors can witness the best of California’s livestock, from prized cattle to goats and sheep, in the Open Livestock Competition and Junior Livestock Competition. These events not only highlight the work of farmers but also educate the public about the importance of agriculture in California.

For thrill-seekers, the fair’s carnival rides and games are a must. With various rides designed for all ages, the carnival promises fun for the whole family. Each Tuesday of the fair, all rides are $2. The rides include staples such as the state fair slide, bumper cars, a giant Ferris Wheel, rollercoasters and more.

The California State Fair has a robust lineup of live entertainment. Attendees can enjoy concerts by well-known artists, local band performances and cultural dance showcases. Fair-goers can enjoy concerts for free with their fair admission at the Toyota Concert Series. Starting at 5 p.m. daily, visitors can line up for first-come, first-served seating accommodating up to 700 guests. For those looking for a closer view, reserved seats are available for purchase starting at $25. Food lovers can indulge in traditional fair foods like corn dogs and funnel cakes or gourmet options reflecting California’s diverse cuisine, ensuring there is something to satisfy every palate. The fair also features numerous food and drink competitions, showcasing the best in local produce, wines and craft beers, in addition to cooking competitions.

The fair is packed with special events and activities, ensuring there’s something new to see and do every day. Highlights include fireworks shows (Fridays and Saturdays), pie-eating contests (July 23) and horse racing (Friday to Sunday).

The fair will be open Monday to Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Daily admission is $16 for adults; $12 for seniors (ages 62 plus); $10 for youth (ages 5 to 12); and free for children ages 4 and under.
