Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Begins Westfield UTC Expansion

After a successful groundbreaking last spring, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has begun constructing the highly-anticipated expansion of Westfield UTC, San Diego‘s premier lifestyle destination. The new extension will add new gathering spaces for the community, including fresh boutiques, restaurants and enhanced amenities.

Slated for completion in early 2026, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) has begun constructing new shopping and dining additions in Westfield UTC in San Diego. The expansion will introduce new, first-to-market luxury boutiques and chef-led restaurants, enhanced amenities, sustainability features, community gathering places and green spaces. This development will further solidify the center’s status as Southern California’s leading luxury and designer shopping destination.

The project will be developed on the site of the former Nordstrom and the adjacent wing of shops, ensuring no disruption to the center’s current operations. URW, with its commitment to sustainability, aims to achieve LEED certification with this development by incorporating innovative, sustainable building strategies, including the use of renewable energy, natural materials, a biophilic design and biodiversity, enhancing Westfield UTC’s environmental, social and economic contributions to the local community.

“Westfield UTC is a one-of-a-kind lifestyle destination that continues to build on its longstanding legacy to deliver one of the best customer experiences in California,” says Kim Brewer, senior vice president of Development for URW in the U.S., in a press release. “This project presents an exciting opportunity to unlock the full potential of the former Nordstrom space, adding something completely fresh for our guests and ensuring its continued positive impact in the community.”

Along with the new designer boutiques, two globally inspired restaurants along La Jolla Village Drive will join Westfield UTC’s signature dining collection, and a new valet service adjacent to the precinct will provide convenient and seamless arrival.

As an outdoor destination, the expansion’s design will evoke a resortlike experience throughout the center, drawing from La Jolla’s beautiful and refined architectural legacy. Breezy concourses with lush landscaping, detailed paving and modern furnishings will offer guests numerous opportunities to rest and recharge after a day of shopping.

“This expansion will elevate the already exceptional experience at Westfield UTC,” says Ryan Perry, senior general manager of Westfield UTC, in a press release. “It reflects our continued commitment to creating extraordinary, sustainable places where people can connect through meaningful shared experiences.”

The new additions to Westfield UTC are set to open in early 2026.
