Nonprofit of the Month: Scoop San Diego Ice Cream Festival

Scoop San Diego, a nonprofit that uses the sweet treat as a catalyst for social change, hosts its third-annual Scoop San Diego Ice Cream Festival in Balboa Park on Saturday, May 22. The event marks America’s first drive-through ice cream festival.

Event-goers can chill out in the comfort of their car and enjoy samples from 25-plus local ice cream and gelato shops, including Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream, Mr. Trustee, GelatoLove, Salt & Straw and more., during Scoop San Diego. There will even be three stops serving up dog-friendly ice cream.

One hundred percent of net proceeds from the event will be donated to Feeding San Diego, a nonprofit on a mission to connect every person facing hunger with nutritious meals by maximizing food rescue.  In addition, attendees can donate a nonperishable food item (no glass) that will go to a Feeding San Diego agency partner to help those facing hunger. Every guest who donates an item to the food drive will be entered into a raffle where they can win prizes.

“After the past year, we believe everyone deserves to enjoy the comfort of America’s favorite dessert,” says Scoop San Diego founder Daniel Szpak. “With so many participating ice cream shops and flavors, there will be something here for everyone to enjoy and sweeten their day. We are so happy to be back and bringing people together in a safe, socially distant way while still doing what we love. But it doesn’t stop there, we also believe in the importance of food safety, and while we are enjoying our sweet treats we also acknowledge the impact that COVID-19 has had, which is why we are looking forward to working with Feeding San Diego.”

There will be limited entry each hour between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Each vehicle requires one ticket with a maximum of four guests per vehicle. Guests will redeem their tickets at more than 25 local ice cream and gelato shops during the one-hour time slot of their choice.
