Hometown: Los Angeles

First job: Sandwich delivery girl.

Favorite ways to spend your free time in CA: I love Los Angeles because I can live in a single-family house with a porch and yard and still be in the middle of the city and run down to the bodega on the corner. Caveat 1: I bought my house in the 80’s. Caveat 2: the bodega is now a hipster recreation of a bodega, with an amazing wine selection.

Your biggest accomplishment and why: Raising three kids, mostly as a single mom, all of whom are still speaking to me (and each other).

The biggest obstacle you overcame: When I was eight years old, my mother was struck down by a rare disease. She was in a coma for three months. When she woke up, her brain was damaged and she couldn’t remember who we were or what had happened to her. Her language and motor skills were severely impacted. Her cognitive skills never fully recovered, so in a real sense I lost my mother. The new person she had become was completely dependent on my father, my younger brother and myself.

Someone who inspires you and why: Stacey Abrams. I’ve never met her, but if she was a Tarot card, I would call her the Happy Strategist. She serenely floats above and sees the whole chessboard. She is undeterred and cannot be diverted from her course. And she writes romance novels.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Follow your rage.

Favorite quote: “Can’t anybody here play this game?”

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I tied for fifth place in the 1985 Women’s British Bodybuilding Championship (in a field of six).

What makes someone fabulous: It’s a matter of high-definition. An ordinary person is sometimes this, sometimes that, a bit not sure, a bit going with the group and so on. A fabulous person is self-created, intentionally distinct. They have chosen to be clearly this and not that. They present so vividly that everyone is more or less agreed on who they are.  It’s Muhammad Ali; it’s Juan Gabriel; it’s Fran Lebowitz.
