Restaurant of the Week: A.R. Valentien

A.R. Valentien has long been one of the preeminent fine dining options in La Jolla. This restaurant is known for its elegant environment, exceptional service, vast wine selection and farm-to-table cuisine with ingredients sourced from local farms and artisanal producers.

Located at the historic Lodge at Torrey Pines, the restaurant is named after turn-of-the-century artist Albert Robert Valentien. It overlooks the picturesque Torrey Pines golf course and the Pacific beyond with its beautiful outdoor patio for al fresco dining. The restaurant’s interior is warm yet classically sophisticated, with dark wood furnishings and soft lighting, creating an intimate, upscale atmosphere without ever feeling pretentious or uninviting. It’s the perfect spot for a casual business dinner after 18 holes or a birthday or anniversary.

A.R. Valentien is committed to sustainability and supporting local producers. The restaurant sources its ingredients from local farms and artisanal producers, including Chino Farms, Weiser Family Farms and Catalina Offshore Products. The restaurant also has its own on-site garden, for growing herbs, vegetables and edible flowers used in the dishes.

The focused menu from recently promoted Executive Chef Kelli Crosson frequently changes to reflect the changing seasons. Current highlights include braised veal cheek persillade, Marcona almond-crusted swordfish, a pan-roasted California lamb rack and caramelized sea scallops with pancetta. There is also a wonderful assortment of artisanal cheeses that pair perfectly with A.R. Valentien’s robust wine selection.

In addition to its exceptional cuisine, A.R. Valentien is known for its outstanding service. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive, providing a professional level of welcoming hospitality. One of the mainstays at the restaurant, long-tenured manager and advanced sommelier Paul Krikorian makes a point to work the room on most nights, greeting guests and letting them try something special and unique to elevate their meal. Krikorian’s infectious passion and affability are integral to what has made A.R. Valentien so special for years.

Overall, A.R. Valentien is a restaurant that truly stands out in the crowded culinary scene of San Diego. Its commitment to local, sustainable ingredients and expertly crafted dishes make it a destination for casual diners and gourmands alike. Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for an unforgettable dining experience, A.R. Valentien remains one of the region’s preeminent options.
